How Much Money Should You Budget for Stone Countertops?

Stone countertops are in no way considered to be the cheap option when it comes to redoing your existing countertops or installing new ones for the first time. Stone is a great way to give your space a very customized and high quality look, and increase the value of your home. The question is, how much is it going to cost? In this blog we’ll take a look at some of the more expensive parts of a new stone countertop.

The first main cost you’re going to incur is the price of the actual stone. This price is going to vary greatly as there is massive variation in type of stone, all stones coming with a different price point. Marble is one of the cheapest natural stones, granite is the next most expensive, with quartzite being the most expensive of the common natural stones, comparable in price, if not slightly higher than quartz. A good estimate for fabricated and installed price per square foot is about $60-150. This cost may seem high, but it’s factoring in not only the cost of the slab of stone, but the cost of templating, cutting, and polishing the stone. Your edges are often included if you decide to go with a basic style, but expect an additional $5-15 a foot for more intricate styles. Sink and stove cutouts are an additional cost, at usually $75-150 depending on the location and specifics.

Choosing a sink is a big step all on its own. You can either supply your own sink and give the dimensions to the templating team, buy an instock sink, or you can choose one of our distributor’s sinks to be ordered in. A sink can cost anywhere from $50-500 in general, depending on the material, size, style, and location installed.

When it comes down to install, the last cost that you’re going to have is the tearout of your current countertops. Most installers have a minimum tearout fee of around $200, with a cost per-square-foot of removal of usually around $5-15, depending on the material, as some materials, such as old stone, are considerably harder to remove.

There can be other costs that come up if changes have to be made to your existing cabinets to fit the countertops correctly.
