What Exactly are Dekton Countertops?
Have you heard of Dekton before? Most likely not. This material is very new and only just starting to gain traction and recognition. Dekton is an engineered stone made from quartz, glass, and porcelain, which are mixed together then put under high heat and compression with the design printed on the top layer.
Pros: Dekton is one of the toughest materials that you can use for countertops. It is heat-proof, cold-proof, stain-proof, and sun-proof. The slabs are much larger than most other materials, meaning that you often won’t need any noticeable seams. Dekton countertops are also surprisingly affordable, often cheaper than quartz. These countertops are probably the best choice if you have an outdoor kitchen, as they require no maintenance and are going to be able to easily withstand mostly whatever mother nature has to offer.
Cons: Similar to every other countertop material, Dekton isn’t without its flaws. The patterns on the stone do not go completely through, so in the unfortunate event of a chip, it will be far more noticeable and less fixable than other materials. Finding a good fabricator is a major key for any countertop install, and will make or break your space. Additionally Dekton is far more limited in colors and styles, with fewer edge profiles available.
If you are looking for the perfect countertop for your outdoor space, this may be the one, especially if it will be getting a lot of exposure to the sun and elements. Indoor use is not a bad option, as long as you can find a quality fabricator that knows how to work with Dekton. Keep in mind that although Dekton is known for its high strength and durability, it is more prone to chipping than other stones, and these chips won’t be as easily repaired on this material. Spend your time to do research to find what stone is going to work the best for your space, not only looks, but for the amount of use that the countertop is going to have.
